How To Save Money On Air Conditioning

frugal living tipsGet ready to hear a handy dandy frugal living tip, because today we’re going to talk about how to save money on air conditioning, because let’s face it those summer utility bills can be brutal!  For starters I use window air conditioners, not central air. Don’t get me wrong, if I had a working furnace and ac unit I’d probably use it haha! But because I don’t which allows me to control exactly where and when I want to cool things down in my house. You can achieve similar results by closing off vents if you have central heat and air!

I have a three level home, and there’s no way I want to pay what it would cost to keep this far from efficiently insulted 1940’s house cool. So in the morning I shut off the top attic level which is where the master suite is located. Which means in the dead of summer it gets stifling up there, but I don’t mind because I don’t use that space during the day. I try to turn the air back on around dinner time so it has a chance to cool down a bit before I head up for bed. I also have to ceiling fans that help circulate the cool air even further. Ceiling fans are great by the way, moving the air around can help keep a room substantially cooler!

My next tip is complements of my father. He came up with a way for me to temporarily seal the windows. No nasty tapes or permanent caulking. This foam can pop right back out and go into storage with the air units themselves when I swap them out for heaters in winter. Watch the video for a quick tutorial.
