Crochet Lunch Bag Pattern

I generally replace my kid’s lunch boxes every year or two because they get destroyed. (Have I mentioned that my kids are virtual cyclones of destruction yet?) But this year I decided that I’d had enough and I wasn’t spending the money! So enjoy your free Lunch Bag pattern 🙂

This was custom designed to my 2 girls requests, but with the right color choices I think that this could easily be converted for a boy. Originally I was going to add spots to the body but then I didn’t feel like extending the project any longer. Am I the only one who loves that it’s turning fall? I always enjoy crochet more in the fall because it’s hard to have a bunch of hot yarn in your lap during the hot summer months!

H hook

Front & Back Panel (Pinkish Maroon in the video)
Chain 25, turn, skip 1, 24 SC across
(Chain 1, turn, 24 SC ) x 41 rows
*for the front panel stop here!* (as in cut tie off and hide thread)

For the back panel repeat first steps and continue here:
(Chain 1, turn, 24 SC) x 10 rows
Ch 1, turn, skip 1, 21 SC, skip 1, 1 SC
Ch 1, turn, skip 1, 19 SC, skip 1 1 SC
Ch 1, turn, skip 1, 17 SC, skip 1 1 SC
Ch 1, turn, skip 1, 15 SC, skip 1 1 SC
Ch 1, turn, skip 1, 13 SC, skip 1 1 SC
Ch 1, turn, skip 1, 11 SC, skip 1 1 SC
Ch 1, turn, skip 1, 9 SC, skip 1 1 SC
Ch 1, turn, skip 1, 7 SC, skip 1 1 SC

Cut tie off hide thread.

Side/bottom panel
Ch 21, turn, skip 1, 20 SC
(CH 1, turn, 20SC) x 112 rows
Cut tie off hide thread

Ears – make 2
Chain 7, turn skip 1, 6 SC
(Chain 1, turn 6 SC) x 19 rows
Chain 1, work the first half of a double crochet through all 6 spaces, leaving the second half on the hook. Don’t close off until the last stitch. This is demonstrated in the video!
Cut, tie off, hide thread, and repeat for the second ear.

White eye balls – make 2
Chain 3, join loop
CH 1, 2 SC in each of the next 3 spaces
CH 1, 2 SC in each of the next 6 spaces
CH 1, 2 SC in each of the next 12 spaces
Cut, tie off, hide thread, and repeat for the second eye.

Black eye balls – make 2
Chain 3, join loop
CH 1, 2 SC in each of the next 3 spaces
Cut, tie off, hide thread, and repeat for the second eye.

Tongue
Chain 4, turn, skip 1, 3 SC across
(CH 1, turn, 3 SC) x 5 rows
CH 1, work the first half of a double crochet, but don’t close off until you reach the final one in the row. (I demonstrate this in the video)

Snout
Chain 4, join loop
CH 1, 2 SC in each of the 4 spaces
CH 1, 2 SC in each of the 8 spaces
CH 1, 2 SC in each of the next 16 spaces
CH 1, 32 SC (aka 1 in each)

Handles- do 2 x
Start at one end of the side panel, connect yarn to far right top of that side.
(CH 1, 5 SC) x 32 rows
Connect/sew to the other side of the lunchbox.
*Repeat steps on the other right side of the lunch bag*
