Free Pattern For Baby Onesie (newborn size)
Are you ready for this free pattern for baby onesie (newborn size)? I don't know if there's anything quite as cute as little baby clothes. Then again, that probably has something to do with how cute and tiny babies are! It's taken me five kids to get around to it, but I'm finally doing something about my annoyance with the lack of free sewing patterns for all of the sizes for at least the staple baby clothes. I've noticed over the years that the price of patterns and fabric continues to skyrocket, which makes it less and less feasible to sew clothing for your kids!
Well, enough is enough! I put in some serious sweat equity, and figured out how to sew baby clothes as easily as possible. By utilizing this free pattern, hopefully you can afford to go buy some fabric. If that's still too expensive for your budget, fear not. I'm constantly going through the Goodwill bag my family is saving up to donate and looking for ways to repurpose our own items. In recent years I have also asked friends and family to set aside clothing that they are getting rid of (old t-shirts etc.) and this allows me to make free (or near free) projects. I especially like how this keeps items from going to the landfill. Just make sure you take whatever you don't use to a thrift store so it saves them an extra trip.
This pink and white onesie only cost me a few pennies worth of thread and sew on snaps to make. The fabric came from an old halter top my niece had given to my second eldest daughter. She wore it for a few years before she grew out of it, and then put it in our Goodwill box. I hacked it into pieces and gave it one more life as a newborn onesie haha!
This was one of my earlier drafts, and if you look really close you can see how awful the leg binding looks. I was trying so hard to design a onesie pattern where I wouldn't have to get out my iron. Sadly it was an epic fail. I eventually admitted defeat and cleaned off the table so I could set up my ironing board. With messy children eating three meals a day I think I deserve hazard pay for my efforts haha! Oh and special thanks to my friend Sarah who gave me the troll fabric. She helped clear out a closet full of her mom's fabric stash and I was the lucky recipient of most of it. Free is always my favorite price for sewing projects!
Here are the materials I used to make the onesie in the video tutorial in case you want yours to be the same. Heads up, if it's from Amazon and you click through and order something I get a small percentage back. Zero pressure.
And without further ado, here are the step by step video tutorial instructions for how to sew a newborn size baby onsie. This baby onsie is gender neutral so whether you're sewing for a baby boy or a baby girl you are all set!
