Newborn sleeper pattern – free sewing pattern
Are you looking for a free sewing pattern for newborn sleeper? Then keep on reading because you’ve come to the right place!
With baby number five on the way I decided it was time to make some baby clothes because it’s been fourteen years since I had a girl and this momma is very, very sick of blue haha. My smallest baby was in the eight pound range. Boy would I love for that to happen again with this one! [It did! 8 lbs 5 oz, my smallest baby yet! :0)] Anyway, my kids never stay in newborn clothes for long, but I was determined to start my sewing journey at the beginning.
With baby number four I had tried some store bought patterns and I was very frustrated by how poorly they fit my kids. So this time I decided to start by taking apart some of the tried and true (and milk stained) pieces that had actually fit! Many, many, drafts later I finally decided I liked this newborn pj pattern enough to share. So here it is! Are you ready to learn how to sew a newborn sleeper?
There are nine pages of pattern pieces, so make sure you print them all. Also, you’ll want to make sure your printer doesn’t have any settings checked that change the scale, it should say something along the lines of “print to size”. I hope you enjoy this free baby sewing pattern, and that the video instructions make all the steps clear. Warning, I’ve had very little formal training (one class in college) so I might do things a little differently than you are used to 🙂
To make this newborn baby sleeper you’ll need:
1/2 a yard of stretchy knit fabric
a 15 inch zipper
coordinating thread
If you want to use the same materials I did you can find them here:
Pink floral fabric:
15 inch zipper(don’t buy this brand, it doesn’t hold up well to constant diaper changes):
Pink thread:
Sewing machine:

Did you make this baby sleeper pattern? Please leave a comment below in the description! And remember… it’s much easier to sew for baby BEFORE baby arrives haha!
Now that baby has arrived I’m working on the 0-3 month size sleeper, so be on the lookout as I’m hoping to post that soon. Also, I’m still editing the video footage, but I have a free pattern for newborn sized baby onsies and pants coming soon. This has been a very rewarding process. I’ve sewn clothing for the children before, but never this much all at once.
If you haven’t already seen it you might enjoy these tutorials I already have on how to make a pacifier clip, and how to sew a changing mat cover.
You’re awesome! Thank you so so much!!
I’m trying to download the pattern but it’s not working out..please, please help 🤗
Hi there! Did you try clicking on the black button near the bottom of the post that said download? It’s below the video. Please tell me more of what you’re seeing on your end so I can help 🙂
Thank you so much for your free patterns. I bought some patterns from Etsy and I am so disappointed because I can’t use them. No instructions or video and they are so expensive. Waste of money. Thank you so much. I was able to make a few onsies and when I saw that you had a sleeper video I was so excited. Your videos are so easy to follow. I’m making them for my granddaughter but I’m a beginner sewer. A big thumbs up to you
Thank you for sharing this pattern. It is adorable! I really enjoyed sewing the newborn sleeper. I prefer written instructions but your video tutorial was pretty easy to follow.
For some feedback:
The seam allowance is very tiny (not much margin for error) but it does work. I prefer using a stretch stitch rather than a straight stitch with stretchy fabric. Also, I just recently got a walking foot for my machine….that makes sewing with stretchy fabrics much easier!
Overall, it is a great pattern. Congratulations on your new baby (and your other family members as well.)
