Getting ready for Christmas

SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES

I know its over a month away and we haven’t even had our turkey dinner yet!  But if you’re making your own presents it’s time to start thinking about Christmas.  So bear with me because Modern Homemakers is probably going to be pretty craft heavy for the next few weeks.  I will try to share my projects with you (hopefully in video tutorial form) as I start stuffing those stockings and getting ready for the holidays.

I have multiple reasons for making my own presents, the primary one being the typical lack of extra funds in my household.  Throughout the year I keep my eye out for good deals and crazy clearance items but other than that I try to fill in the gaps with homemade items.  My other reason is that we try not to make gifts the focus of Christmas and buying out Toys R Us doesn’t typically accomplish that!

SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURESI want to make something for Gideon but he’s my first boy so I’m having a hard time deciding what to do with him.  Daddy might be breaking out some scrap wood to make something manly :-)  He can’t have anything that would be a choking hazard so he’s a big challenge.  On the plus side he’s starting to actually play with toys, so anything goes.  Last year I made him this plush train and car.

SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURESI’m not gonna lie , Eowyn is my easiest child to make presents for!  She loves dolls, and clothes, and crafts so I don’t typically have to think too hard for her.  In fact I’ve already made her a few Barbie dresses.  I’ve got a pattern and a video tutorial here that are super easy to make if you’re interested.

SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURESIsondra (my oldest) is the biggest challenge of all.  She doesn’t like dolls.  She could care less about clothes.  She’s a bit of a tom boy, so if anyone has any ideas of things I could make I’m all ears.  Last year I made her a checker board game and we still have fun with it but it wasn’t easy coming up with that idea.

Thanksgiving Games – Turkey Land

thanksgiving games for kids
thanksgiving games

Thanksgiving games are a great way to keep kids entertained

If you’re looking for something fun to do with the kiddos you’ve found it.  As far as Thanksgiving games go, Turkey Land stands out as being especially fun.  Make sure you print all the pieces and if you have card-stock paper I’d recommend that you use it, at least for the game pieces.  This is a free game, so just click on the link below each picture to print the pdf :-)  You might also want to go print a free thanksgiving placemat.

Here’s how you play, the rules are on the game board pieces page that you’ll be printing too.  Players take turns drawing cards. If a player draws a card that has a color, that player must move their piece to the next space on the gameboard that has that color. If a player draws a card with two color blocks, that player must advance two spaces with that color. If a player draws a card with a picture, that player must go to the space with that picture, even if they have already passed that space! If a player lands on the space next to the river of gravy, they can take a shortcut. Whoever makes it to the dinner table first wins!

Brushing Dogs Teeth

Brushing dogs teeth is important so they don’t have stinky breath!

VIDEO TRANSCRIPT – Brushing Dogs Teeth

Brushing dogs teeth is important because their mouth smells gross. Modern Homemakers Video intro and theme song. Hello I’m Renee with Modern Homemakers and today we’re learning about brushing dogs teeth. You’re going to need some doggie toothpaste don’t use your own toothpaste it has different flavors and different enzymes that are specifically for the dog.

Now I bought him a mint flavored toothpaste. One time I accidentally bought him a chicken flavored toothpaste. I’m a vegan and even if you eat meat I don’t think that you would have liked having your dog’s breath smell like chicken. So I recommend a minty or something like that. You need enzymes in the toothpaste.

So you’re also going to need a toothbrush and there are different ones that you can use. Here is one that you put on the end of your finger and you just put that in the end of the mouth and it’s got the bristles on the end of it. You can also get one like this that’s got a long handle so it would reach pretty far back in the mouth two different sizes.

Wizard has actually been trained to use electric toothbrushes. I don’t use those other two kinds any more because this does a great job it moves, if you can just get it in his mouth, I need to get some more toothpaste I’m almost out. And he actually loves the flavor of this, so he’s not gonna mind this at all.

So if you can just get it in his mouth it does all the work. Now with the enzyme toothpaste it’s important to use that because even if you don’t get it brushed, just getting it on those teeth, now look how good his teeth look. Now keep in mind he’s almost 13 years old. Now I’m going to show you the others if you don’t have that kind of toothbrush the most important area is to get on the outside. Or, with the one with the fingertip, and obviously you have to have a dog that is gentle. If you have a vicious dog you wouldn’t want to be putting your fingers in their mouth.

So either one of those, I try to brush his teeth at night. I don’t get it every single night, but I think he’s looking pretty good for his age. And if you’ve got your dog up close to you licking around you wouldn’t you rather that they have better smelling mouth, because you do know they smell rather nasty.

This also is going to help their health because if their mouth is not clean they’ll have different bacteria that can cause all kinds of things even heart conditions and all kind of illness because it’s going to get that bad bacteria into their whole bloodstream so it’s important to keep their mouth clean. How To Cut Dogs Nails

Are you ready to learn how to cut dogs nails?

VIDEO TRANSCRIPT – How To Cut Dogs Nails

Are you ready to learn how to cut dogs’ nails?  Modern Homemakers video intro and theme song.  Dog nails are really tough and hard, and also they’re shaped differently from a human’s nails so you can’t use the same clippers.  There are special clippers for doing a dog’s nail.  And it has a safety area when that’s slid through there that you don’t go too deep on the nail.

You’ll also need to file the nails afterward.  You can use a drimmel tool or something like this to file.  Or if you don’t have that that’s fine you can use an emery board.  So Wizard has been having his nails clipped since he’s a puppy and he’s going on 13 years old so we’ve been doing this awhile.  Generally he’s pretty good.

His nails are, most of them you can see are white so you can see that pink part underneath you don’t ever want to clip that far.  Now some of the nails are darker or black and your dog might have all dark nails.  You want to barricade them in where they can’t get out of the room and if you’ve got a second person to help than that’s great if you’ve got a second person to kind of corral him.  And sometimes I’ll come back to a nail, like if for some reason that one’s bothering him

So I’ll just go to the other side.  If like this one looks like it’s grown faster or I missed it last time or something, I’m gonna give it two clips because it looks really long.  You want to make sure you can see really well.  Good lighting, if you wear reading glasses put those on so you can see just what you’re doing.

So that little guard thing keeps it from going down real far.  Because if you go down to that pink area, they’ll bleed it’s pretty traumatic so you make sure that you’ve got that safety guard on and if you do it frequently, like I do his once a month, whenever he has his bath, so after he has his bath the nails are a little softer, like here’s where having that other person would be helpful.  If I just put my foot there he’s like stopping his wandering.

Ok the back nails do not grow as fast.  Ok I just did that one that he wasn’t wanting me to do.  I’ve got hime kind of trapped around the door here.  These don’t grow as fast so you might not have to do them every time but I’ll go ahead and do them today for the video.  They are, just like a human you know your toe nails don’t grow as fast as your fingernails, it’s that same thing.  Good we’re almost done!

So, I don’t have the money to go myself to get a pedicure, manicure I’m certainly not going to spend that money on my dog.  Yup if I was gonna do anyone it would be me.  Almost done just got two left.  Almost done, and like I said you can always come back later.  What I’m going to show you now is the filing because I don’t want to make this too long and boring.

So this is a tool that we bought and the toenail fits in there and it’s just gonna file off those rough edges.  So just like for you if you clipped your nails you would still want to also file them afterwards to make them smoother.  So it’s the same thing for a dog.  You can either do this, which he’s not being happy today , or, he’s not liking that sound so I’m just gonna do an emery board.  Usually he’s fine with that other thing.  This just keeps them from being rough they jump up on you just makes it a little more smooth.  It doesn’t take much.  Do that to all the nails, and then he’s done.  You just saved yourself some money and they get used to you doing it it’s actually less traumatic for your dog also if you’re the one who’s doing it. Because they know you.  He’s really pretty cold right now because he just had his bath too.  Oh that’s the other thing, when you do the nails after the bath they’re softer.  Dog nails are so hard that makes them a little bit easier to clip.

If you missed that video on how to give a dog a bath go ahead and watch that one first and then watch this one on clipping the nails.  Please subscribe to our youtube channel.  You might also like how to cut baby boy hair.
