Spring Vegetable Garden

This is the first season for our “full service” garden. Full service meaning starting our seedlings inside under grow lights inside and transplanting them to raised beds outside. Our hope, with the new design my husband created, is to have a four seasons garden. Fresh organic produce from our backyard all year long!! We have converted our raised beds to square foot gardens with cold frames. My husband has been the mastermind behind this operation and I think he is developing quite the green thumb. My job is to make sure things look nice (no tacky looking gardens), help with transferring, watering, and encouraging (yes, I talk to the plants like Christopher Walken does).

Of course there are jobs for the children too like digging, watering, harvesting, etc. which they love. Involving kids in the garden teaches them about where food comes from. Sadly, many kids in America do not know how or where food is grown. When you involve them in the process they are learning more about healthy food and hopefully will start eating what you grow.

Here are some vegetables that we will be eating from our spring garden:

  • broccoli
  • kale
  • onions
  • carrots
  • lettuce mix
  • butter lettuce
  • celery
  • brussel sprouts
  • cabbage
  • cauliflower
  • peas
  • fava beans
  • beets
  • rainbow chard

YUM! Our journey in growing our own organic produce to keep costs down has started and I am SO excited!!

Here are some pictures of what the process has been thus far:

Look at that beauty- equipped with hinges for easy access. In this shot we are hardening off the plants before transplanting.

Happy plants...we hope they survive their transplant. It has been two months since their start.

Watering plants- great activity to get the kids involved.

  1. It’s sad that “kids today” have no idea where their food comes from. Of course most of the food they eat isn’t actual food, it’s chemicals which is even sadder.

  2. I love that video… just had my 6 year old watch it with me so we could giggle at the googly eyes together 🙂

  3. It is a classic that my brother introduced to me a few years back. I could watch it over and over. Christopher Walken is great. .
