Rice Cookers

Why I LOVE my rice cooker

Our new rice cooker should be inducted as a family member. Seriously, this puppy has steamed over 200 cups of rice and quinoa in the past couple of months. Should I have admitted that? The rice cooker is our go-to for a stress-free meal. Sometimes my husband or I will shout from the next room, “Start some rice!” We start rice in the cooker before we even know what we are making to go with it. Yes, I know this is crazy. Some nights the accompaniment is stir fry, others it is curry and our family’s favorite: beans and rice. Recent winter mornings have been easier to wake up to knowing that we are having hot oatmeal with blueberries, honey, and a dash of almond milk. Yes, this oatmeal is from our newest family member, The Rice Cooker (capitalized since it IS a family member now). If your family likes rice, quinoa, steamed veggies, oatmeal, steamed meat (not my thing), then you need to get one of these puppies. This is way easier to use than making it on the stovetop. Trust me, I made it on the stovetop for 6 years after our first rice cooker broke.

What we make in The Rice Cooker currently:

  • all different types of rice
  • rice meals (I add broth, some veggies, sundried tomatoes, spices, oil)
  • quinoa dishes
  • oatmeal (yes sireee)
  • steamed fresh and frozen vegetables

Future plans for The Rice Cooker:

  • lentils
  • frittata
  • porridge with berries
  • applesauce
  • steam dumplings
  • hard boiled eggs
  • rice pudding
  • cake

Other reasons to buy a rice cooker:

  • more energy efficient than cooking on the stove
  • easier clean up
  • frees up space on the stovetop
  • can make a one pot meal meaning you can make rice and veggies all at once (which my dishwashing conservationist husband LOVES)

This is the rice cooker we have currently (bought in December 2011). While I cannot vouch for the longevity of the cooker, my husband and I both agree that it has paid for itself many times over already. This has changed our kitchen life for the better, forever.

  1. Bethany,
I feel the same way about our new fryer. That thing has saved me many many times. Our family loves rice, so a rice cooker might be right up my alley. I also need a bread maker! We eat so much bread that no matter how much I buy, (30 loaves at one time is the record) we seem to always be out. I bet you could make a crock pot style bread pudding, or apple pie in the rice cooker.

  2. You definitely would benefit from a rice cooker. Today I made rice early in the afternoon, popped it in the fridge for a few hours and made fried rice for dinner. Super simple. And yes, a bread maker is great too. 30 loaves….Oh my, your munchkins must LOVE bread. Yum to the apple pie!

  3. Quinoa in the rice cooker. Why didn’t I think of that? I love to eat it and hate to cook it. That organic Costco size bag I have isn’t going to cook itself. Thanks for the idea.

  4. When we’re done with the rice (because i always make the max. amount of rice) I lift the pan part out, put on the lid and pop it in the fridge. Then we can have breakfast rice which is easy enough that even my husband can make it! Butter, milk, and sugar (I said easy not healthy). No extra dirty dish to store it in and dinner and breakfast out of 1 cooking effort.
